Maybe I am a runner - Sometimes It’s Not About Effort. It’s About Belief.
I was deleting my 23andMe data (and if you haven't done this please consider it) when I saw a line I’d never paid attention to before:
👉 “More likely than average to be good at endurance” and looking at some more detailed analysis of my data, it said "You will likely have a higher baseline fitness to start, and experience significant increases in VO2 max, associated with exceptional athletic performance."
It caught me off guard. I’ve always loved hiking—but running? Hard no. And I'm definitely someone who considered myself a non-athlete.
But that little genetic note shifted something. What if I’ve been telling myself the wrong story?
So I started a 5K run program on my Peloton Interactive app. Not with the goal of becoming a runner, but with a new mindset: maybe I can.
And honestly? It’s going better than I expected. Maybe it's because I have some genes that are prone to make this better (and I'm just learning this out in middle age) or maybe because I'm taking it with a different attitude. One where I'm not assuming I'm the worst at the thing.
Sometimes change starts with effort—but sometimes it starts with curiosity.
A little crack in the old belief system. A willingness to rewrite the narrative.
What’s something you’ve told yourself you’re “not good at”… that might deserve a second look?
